christabellamotte asked: I swear every time you post a picture of the amazing things science does, I'm prouder and prouder to be a physicist, and sometimes chemist <3

Tussilago farfara in normal and UV light, respectively. This species, one of the earliest spring flowers, has virtually no visual indication of a bull’s-eye pattern. UV reflectance of the outer petals is quite high, but somewhat varying. Thus, the flower heads may record with the outer parts being pinkish instead of white. The central flower disc has no UV reflectance and thus records...

Hesperis matronalis in normal and UV light, respectably. A cruciferous species with pale mauve or purple flowers, in which the petals reflect some UV on the outer segment, while the inner area absorbs UV. The anthers and style all strongly absorb UV. © Bjørn Rørslett

Drosera longifolia under normal UV, and false-colour composite light, respectively. The Great Sundew plant faces a real challenge, since it is carnivorous and catches insects with its sticky leaves, but at the same time, it needs to attract pollinators to the flowers. One solution apparently is to “signal” at different wave lengths. Thus, the leaves are yellowish green with red...

christabellamotte asked: Haha, Sid's so adorable. Awkward and loveable, my kinda guy. And Cassie's just so goddamned... UNF! Like, I wish people saw me as vaguely resembling her. Is it retarded that she's my new role model? Also, I'm still laughing my head off at Maddison Twatter, PhD. I think his name alone just made my life.

Epilobium angustifolium under normal and UV light, respectively. A tall species with long spikes bearing bright purple flowers, each with a discernable but not prominent UV pattern. Note in this species the bracts, non-pollinated stigma, and pistils, all have low UV reflectance and contribute to the two-zoned pattern. © Bjørn Rørslett
